Ritual of Runes and futharks.

I am posting this ritual for those of us who need a little boost of Self empowerment. I have had moments in my life where I doubt my own destiny, my worth to my Gods and my community, or even my skills as Volva, due to issues of Oorlog, or the life tempering of Wyrd that I haven’t worked through yet.

Don’t let the simplicity of this ritual fool you; it is very effective in initiating powerful changes through the use of Futharks and by learning the art of creating personal “runes” being infused into your multilevel intricate being.

This ritual activates empowerment through all ones souls self’s. *note* I have spelled the futharks phonically for ease of saying out-loud their pronunciations.

Materials:You will need a set of colored markers, paints, or pencils including red, orange, yellow, green, light or sky blue, dark blue, violet or purple, black, and grey. You will also want something that marks white, silver, and gold. (I have used paints or fabric paints for the latter, sometimes for all of them.) You need a medium to work on–cloth or paper on which all the colors will show up (beige or brown for example). You will need to create the personal runes you associate with yourself at this time that give you power and strength. *NOTE ~With the word “RUNE” I am meaning the words TRUE meaning, not the futhark alphabet (though we will use those in this ritual too) which is: a spell or incantation.synonyms: incantation · charm · conjuration · rune · magic formula · abracadabra · sorcery · magic · witchcraft · witchery · hex · mojo · makutua section of the Kalevala or of an ancient Scandinavian poem.*

In addition to your usual altar setup, you will want a red candle, and a fiery scented incense, such as sage or cedar, and a bowl of fresh dirt, Meade as offering and your blot bowl.

Purpose:The purpose of this ritual is to tap into your own personal life-force and amplify it into a personal statement of self-confidence and strength; then via chanting your own rhyming runes and drawing a physical mandala of manifestation- you send this energy of change into the muti-verse.. Afterwards, when you feel yourself dragging in one area or another, concentrate on the mandala by locating the appropriate furthark in the appropriate color for a bit, and you will find yourself tapping back into the energies you established in the ritual when you sang out your person runes. (I hung the finished futhark-piece on my wall where I could see it every day to reinforce its lessons, as well.)

Ritual:
First, establish your working space, after you’ve gathered all your materials together. Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit and draw or paint–you’ll be here a while.
When I’m doing a spell-working such as this in my temple space, I do not generally go through an elaborate space cleansing and space casting ritual–unless the temple feels that it needs it! I start by calling in the directions and visualize them forming a sphere of power centered around the altar.Face the east and say:

Austri, Spirits of the East, powers of Air, I ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help me find inspiration and visualize the runes clearly that I may partake of their essence.

Face the south and say:Suðri, Spirits of the South, powers of Fire, I ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help me find the spirit within to empower the runes and tune into their color energy.

Face the west and say:Vestri, Spirits of the West, powers of Water, I ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help me to seek the mystery within, that the runes I draw here may work upon my emotions for my Highest Good.

Face the north and say:Norðri, Spirits of the North, powers of Earth, I ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help me to manifest the runes in the third-dimensional world so that their energies may become a part of my physical existence.

Face the sky and say:Freya, you who gift us with seidr; I ask that you watch over me in this spell-working. Lend me your wisdom so that I may safely link my inner vision with the outer Self.

Place your hands on the bowl of earth and say:Skadi, I ask that you watch over me in this spell-working. Let me ground myself deeply in you and draw on your strength and energy to sustain me in my work.

Face your altar in the center of the circle and say:Sacred Disir, Spirit that guides me, Ancestors, of whom we are all descended aspects, unite this sphere into a protected space for the wyrd-working I plan to do here.

Once the you feel centered. pour some Meade in your blot bowl and hold it up, saying; Norns who gave us Wyrd, except this gift for a gift! Grant me kenning in my Gladr of summoning my own runes this day, from the well of Urd; so I might know true empowerment!

Place the bowl of Meade back on your alter. begin to raise energy by chanting your personal runes (hidden occult kennings) in a rhyming fashion; chanting with strength, building in speed, volume and intensity each round of your personally created Galdr.

Raise energy through chanting, drumming, shaking or dancing; (or whatever other method you use for magickal work.~The energy for this spell will be drawn primarily out of yourself, because you are attempting to change your own internal energy states.)
Ritual Work:

Now to the work. Mediate on the futhark Sowilo in red. Say the letter. Red symbolizes the lifeforce, and Sowilo as a sigil brings to the lifeforce the energy of essential power. This futhark will link and empower all the other Norse letters. Once you have visualized the futhark and felt its energy, draw it in red in the center of your sheet of paper or cloth. We are going to encircle Sowilo with seven more Norse letters in rainbow colors, corresponding to the Norse Hvel, (akin to the concept of chakras) plus one in white to unite them with the source, then we will bind the energy with four runes at the cardinal points.

Next, meditate on the futhark Tywaz in red. Say the letters name. Here, red represents strength and protection–the essential warrior within. Once you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in red below Sowilo. (This corresponds to the root Hvel at the base of the spine.)

Next, meditate on the futhark Uruz in orange. Say out-loud the letter’s name. Here, orange represents vitality, and the rune brings in the essence of potency, courage, and strength. Once you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in orange above and to left of Tywaz (below and left of Sowilo). (This corresponds to the sacral or sexual Hvel below the navel.)

Next, meditate on the futhark Mannaz in yellow. Say the letter’s name. Here, yellow represents the intellect, and Mannaz is a request for self-knowledge. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in yellow above and to the left of Uruz (directly left of Sowilo). (This corresponds to the power or ego Hvel at the solar plexus.)

Next, meditate on the letter Feoh in green. Say the futhark’s name out-load. Here, green represents expansion, and Feoh abundance, prosperity, growth, and universal love. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in green above and to the right of Mannaz (above and left of Sowilo, lined up with Uruz). (This corresponds to the heart Hvel in the center of the chest.)

Next, meditate on the letter Wunjo in light or sky blue. Say the furthark’s name. Here, the light blue represents expression and communication, and Wunjo spiritual gain, joy, and self-achievement. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in light blue above Sowilo, lined up with Tywaz. (This corresponds to the throat Hvel .)

Next, meditate on the futhark Laguz in dark blue or indigo. Say the letter. Here, the indigo represents synthesis, and Laguz inner wisdom. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in dark blue below and to the right of Wunjo (above and to the right of Sowilo, aligned with Feoh). (This corresponds to the third eye Hvel in the center of the forehead between the eyes.)

Next, meditate on the letter Ken in violet or purple. Say the futharks name. Here, the purple represents spirituality, and Ken spiritual guidance. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in violet to the below and to the right of Laguz (to the right of Sowilo and even with Man). (This corresponds to the crown Hvel at the top of the head.)

Next, meditate on the Futhark Algiz in white. Say the letter. Here, the white represents healing and integration, and Algiz spiritual assistance, shielding, and protection. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw it in white below and to the left of Ken (below and to the right of Sowilo, even with Uruz). (This represents the body’s connection to the Higher Self and Spirit–the universal Mind of the Universe, if you will.)

Now that the central pattern is complete, and we’ve linked your life-force into the Higher Self, we’ll surround the pattern with runes (again, your own wordings of hidden occult secrets spoken in Rhyme) to bind and activate the desired qualities. First, before saying your rune; draw on the letter Isa in silver.

Chant your own rune of change. Here, the color silver represents receptivity to the changes you wish to make in your ego self, and the futhark Isa is the inner journey of static freeze you have embarked upon. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw in silver the letter Isa to the left of Mannaz and Sowilo.

Next, meditate on your own rune of your needs. Begin the chant your own rune of need. Here, medite on the color grey, which represents flexibility, and then draw the letter Nyd to signify the endurance, persistence and resolve that you will need to accomplish the changes you desire. When you have visualized it and felt your own runes energy of need, draw the futhark Nyd in grey above Wunjo and Sowilo.

Next, meditate on Mannaz again, this time seeing a gold light, and begin to chant a rune of connection. Here, the gold represents activity, and the letter Mannaz represents self-activation. This rune of your own creation activates the energies of the others you’ve linked with to accomplish the changes you desire. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw another Mannaz furthark in gold to the right of Kennaz and Sowilo. (You should have a horizontal line formed through the center with the letters Isa, Mannaz, Sowilo, Ken, and Mannaz again.)

Finally, meditate on the power of disruption and thorough changes. See the color black as you form your own rune about upheaval that LASTING changes bring. Begin to chant your rune. Here the black represents release, so draw the futhark Hagalaz as this letter represents the energy of change and transformation. You are releasing the energy of your spell onto the Inner Planes to do its transformative work. When you have visualized it and felt its energy, draw Hagalaz in black below Tywaz and Sowilo. (You should now have a vertical line of letters through the center with Nyd, Wunjo, Sowilo, Tywaz, and Hagalaz.) Visualize the energy of the circle your made by your creation of your own runes and the futharks used as sigils being bound into your work.
Closing: When you feel your ritual is done, thank Freya and the Nornir, your Disir and Ancestors by offering up the the mead in Sumbles, by honoring and thanking each in turn. Thank the spirits you invoked in all seven directions for their presence and help by offering up some Meade in turn. Be sure to give thanks for their presence and aid in this work.

Closing:
When you feel your ritual is done, thank Skadi as the personified power of the wilderness inside you, and the Nornir, your Disir and Ancestors by offering up the the mead in Sumbles, by honoring and thanking each in turn. Thank the spirits you invoked in all seven directions for their presence and help by offering up some Meade in turn. Be sure to give thanks for their presence and aid in this work.

Open the Space, and say: To all spirits visible and invisible that have been present in this ritual, depart in peace, my thanks and blessings. Pour the rest of the Meade on the ground.

When you return home, put your mandala up somewhere so that you can see it and meditate on it daily to achieve its affects in your life!

Notes: The ritual makes the rune energies that were part of you part of the 9 worlds, and attunes your Spirit Self to them so that they will be available to you at need. The written futharks on your mandala work as sigils to continue the spoken rune portion of this work.

When you find the work has manifested sufficiently, be sure to destroy the mandala.

  1. I would very much like to perform this ritual but I am unsure of how to find my own personal “rune” or incantation.
Is there a previous article about how to do this? I tried to find one but may have missed it. If there isn’t, is it possible you could maybe delve into the subject?
    Thank you

    1. Hailsa Tracy! Your personal runes are incantations you create to manifest your intentions of a magical work.
As found in the construction of a Galdr or galdralag, Runes (incantations) made in an alliterated meter and made to rhyme are THE way a powerful spell is created, thus making runes (hidden occult secrets, a.k.a. your intentions of manifestation) all the more powerful.
~So, as a very simplified example, say you wish to change your love life; you would say: love I see, come to be, I summon thee, a mate for me!
In this simple metered rhyming rune, each aspect of what you desire or need is chanted or sung by you; thus creating this magical incantation or “Rune” you are sending into the web of wyrd.
*Unfortunately, since Edward Thorsonn’s work in 80’s, The Futharks are called ‘runes’, so everyone today sees the word and think the norse letters of their alphabet are what the Edda’s spoke about when referring to RUNES; but this term of equating Futharks with rune means SIGIL. You can make runic sigils out of ANY letters or symbols.
Here is an explanation of Sigil use: • Make a magical Sigil using Futharks as “runes”

The term sigil derives from the Latin sigillum, meaning “seal”, though it may also be related to the Hebrew segula, meaning word, action, or item of spiritual effect, talisman. The current use of the term is derived from Renaissance magic, which was in turn inspired by the magical traditions of antiquity.
In medieval ceremonial magic, the term sigil was commonly used to refer to occult signs which represented various spirits which the magician might summon. The magical training books called grimoires often listed pages of such sigils. A particularly well-known list is in The Lesser Key of Solomon, in which the sigils of the 72 princes of the hierarchy of hell are given for the magician’s use. Such sigils were considered to be the equivalent of the true name of the spirit and thus granted the magician a measure of control over the beings
There are infinite ways to use sigils but the BEST known way in heathenry is to make them with Norse futharks. Below I will show how to do it with our own alphabet to demonstrate in simplicity, but to match a spell done in seidr; simply replace Norse futharks for our modern roman letters.
1: Write out a Sentence such as, “I will be Queen of the Mongrels”.
2: Remove all the vowels from the sentence, and rewrite all the remaining Letters, “wllbqnfthmngrls.”
3: Next, Remove all the Repeating Letters. So it’s now just a string of non-repeating consonants, “WLBQNFTHMGRS”
4: Take what letters are left and translate them with the Corresponding Rune Letter value.
5: Make a Symbol by Combining the Form of the remaining Rune letters. Just to make it easy, combine the letters into a geometric shape; then, morph the geometric shape of the combined letters till it looks aesthetically pleasing to you, and the combination of the letters are hidden.
6: Charge the Sigil, holding it in your mind during an altered state of consciousness. You can use any means to achieve this altered state, such as Galdr, meditation, dancing, sexual release, chanting, yoga, ritual, etc.
7: After charging your Sigil, destroy all the things you’ve written to make the Sigil. Let nothing be a reminder of its meaning.
8: Carry the Sigil on your person, or keep it within your environment, until you feel the intent for the Sigil is manifesting.
9: While using your Sigil, forget the Symbol’s meaning, and forget the desire behind the original sentence completely. Remembering the desire ruins the ultimate effect.
10: Once your Sigil has done its work, destroy the Sigil itself entirely.

      1. Thank you. After thinking on it more during the night I had a feeling that is what it meant but it never hurts to be sure before one goes merrily off into the Otherworld searching for something. Better safe than sorry I say. Thank you again.
